Copenhagen Portraits: People, Buildings

Why choose to visit Copenhagen at this cold and perhaps unhospitable time of year? The quality of the light is amazing, the food is hearty (well, year round... Copenhagen is really having ), and it's a Scandinavian city we've always wanted to visit. Denmark is rightly famous for its architecture, its design, and now its food as well. Did I mention Lego? We like all of those things. On this visit however we also particularly wanted to meet an artist whose work we first saw at Paris Photo, when we went with John & Debs in Oct.

Jasmine: "thanks Torben for delicious croissants!"
Torben Eskerod, an architect by training, photographs buildings as his day job. I was particularly taken with his portraits. His Campo Verano series, shot in Rome, has more personal associations than I can list here. And it's a poetic, deeply beautiful body of work. You can have a look at examples of his photography on his gallerist's site, Peter Lav Gallery

Torben kindly invited us to visit his studio, in a vast, white, repurposed industrial space, subdivided into studios for his wife - a sculptor and a painter - and other artist colleagues. We could have stayed for hours just examining his impressive library. It was a privilege to hear about his creative trajectory from his very first portraits, learn of his architecture projects and to see his earlier work. We also got a glimpse of work in progress. Magical. Thank you Torben. Let us know when you are coming to London!
